About Our Name and the Odoomber Tree
The Odoomber Tree is found in India. It is sometimes spelled “Audumbar” or “Oudumbar”. Regardless of spelling, Odoomber (औदुंबर) is the name of the tree in the Marathi language, the native language of one of the Principals of Odoomber Tree Capital.
The tree is known in English as the Cluster Fig (Ficus Racemosa). Its name in the Hindi (गूलर) and Punjabi (ਗੂਲਰ) languages is “Guular” and in the Gujarati language it is “Umaraa” (ઉમરાં ).
The tree has special cultural, mythical and spiritual significance in India. It is associated with the beloved deity Dattatray. The tree is said to be representative of the divine “Kalpavriksha” or “Wish Fulfilling Tree”. As that evokes images of affluence, success and prosperity, we found the name to be very appropriate for an Investment firm!
We are also keeping with a long tradition in the Investment space of naming Investment firms after trees. Trees represent rock-solid foundations, deep roots, and steady growth.
